Hot Dogs on the Hill

I'mma start writing more about all my tasty adventures, so here I go!

I'm all about the simplicity when it comes to hot dogs.. I just want mine grilled, with a slight char and on a bun -- NO condiments. DC-3, the new hot dog place on Barracks Row, has taught me that sometimes add-ons can make things better. If you share my taste, you'll love the Bay Bridge hot dog - which comes on a pretzel bun and is topped with crab dip. Your best bet is not to have a naked dog, it seems these lack a little flavor and count on the add-ons to pump 'em up. Another plus for the place, their Italian Beef sammidge is one of the better ones you'll find in DC.

Not too sure I'd trek out there just for a hotdog again, but if in the area, it's definitely something fun to try!

NEW TASTE OF THE NATION FANPAGE!!!!

So, when I first got involved with Taste of the Nation, I made a fan page with the year included.... I got smarter this year. Please add the new fan page!!!

Speaking of being charitable...

Ever since I heard about The Giving Pledge over the summer I have thought it was a wonderful idea. If I had billions of dollars, I'd definitely give a chunk of my fortune to charity -- so expect to see my name on the list if I somehow strike it rich. The Pledge is in the news again because Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has joined, bringing the group to 57. These people are setting a great example, I can only hope more people join the pledge.

Be stylish... And charitable

Yet again Shoedazzle is supporting another cause with a stylish pair of shoes. This time around, they are offering the Little Diva bootie, designed by Kristin Chenoweth, and benefiting the Adoption Institute. In line with current trends, I have a feeling this shoe will be jazzing up my work wardrobe all winter long!

The Importance of Sleep

I've been reading a lot lately about the correlation between getting enough sleep and losing weight. It seems that those people who diet, excersize and get their 8 hours of sleep each night lose 50% more weight than those who don't get a full nights sleep.

I always try to regulate what I eat and try to be healthy however my sleep patterns have always been a little bit off. The past few months I've made it a point to get enough sleep each night and weight maintenance has been so much easier! Just goes to show you how the littlest changes can make a big difference :)

Even modern girls need a little Guidance

I work 7 days a week (juggling 2 jobs), go on multiple vacations a year, find time to work out, see my fabulous friends and incredible boyfriend, cook, clean, keep my closet organized, always make sure I have an unchipped manicure and keep up on world affairs. How do I do it all while remaining perfectly poised, made up and looking like I got enough sleep? I'm a modern girl...

...And it's actually not that hard! All those things your mom told you about keeping a polished appearance and clean home, she was right, but I never wanted to listen to her, until now.

You can be a career woman and domestic goddess. Jane Buckingham was in your shoes once too - and now she's helping us out. I'm currently reading her first book, The Modern Girl's Guide to Life, which teaches you everything from understanding sports (for some it's a foreign language) to hosting the perfect dinner party, to decorating your fabulous new bachlorette pad! I've also read The Modern Girl's Guide to Sticky Situations which I know will help me out soon considering I am prone to awkard situations.

Working women give this a read - you'll be glad you did!

My NYC Favorites

Hey all! Sorry it's been so long - work has been keeping me crazy busy and I'm without internet at home. I spent last weekend in my favorite place ever, the great state of New York, and realized I haven't written to much about my picks for a great time in NYC. Sooooo, here ya go!

Gray's Papaya - Great cheap drunk food AND great cheap (sober) lunch

La Mela - Best family style restaurant in Little Italy

Fanelli's Cafe - Great spot to grab a burger and recharge while shopping in Soho

Vosges - Best chocolate shop in the city

Gansevoort - Rooftop party!!!! :)

Hotel Venus - Patricia Field's store. One of the most interesting clothing shops you'll ever go into

Girl Props - cheap costume, funky, and even cheeky costume jewelry!

Victor's Cafe - Granted, I've only been here once, but my family has been going for years, so you know it's good Cuban food.

And that's just a few. Gotta head back to work - if I think of more I'll add 'em later!

Is the rent really that high?!

Jimmy McMillan, running for governor of New York (my lovely home state) with the platform that "the rent is too damn high," might be a bit of a hypocrite. The New York Post (questionable news source - I know) uncovered that McMillan pays $800 a month for his 1 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. This begs the question - if his rent is not that high, what is he complaining about?! Maybe he should take his platform to the state of California, where the San Jose area boasts the highest average rents in the country. According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, my current home, the Washington DC area, has the third highest average rent. The New York City area came in 6th. Some good news for McMillan, the Buffalo - Niagara Falls area had the second lowest average rent of any city. Someone may need to do some more research ;)

I'll take a cosmopolitan AND a blue hawaiian!

Luxury jewelry company Piaget has put out a new line of cocktail rings - literally - the rings look like cocktails! I can't find any pricing on their website which is probably good because I won't be tempted to spend my entire savings account on one of 'em. They are pretty freakin' fabulous though!

I wouldn't mind smelling burgers all day

...sure, I'd probably gain a few unwanted pounds, but I wouldn't consider it that much of a nuisance.

However, the employees in a downtown DC building do not share my sentiment and, after a long court battle, have ordered burger joint Rouge States be shut down. They claimed that the grease odors were seeping up to their offices and causing a distraction. File this under: one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard!

I'm sad to see it go - with the saturation of burger places in DC, it was a great go to - fresh and tasty burgers, open late, SWEET POTATO FRIES. I'm hoping they'll find another location. My vote is for Chinatown :)

Another one of my recessionista secrets

Good makeup is hard to come by but you don't need to run off and spend hundreds of dollars at Sephora to keep yourself looking fresh-faced. Over the past 9 months I have tried out a lot of the make up offered by online-only site eyeslipsface (e.l.f) and have found the quality to be on par with much more expensive brands. The best part - most of the makeup and brushes on the site will run you $1-$5. Even better- they always have a sale going on, whether it by buy one get one %50 off, or all mineral makeup 20% off.

Go ahead and check out some eyeliner/eyeshadow colors you wouldn't normally use! For $1, you won't be breaking the bank and who knows - you might find a new look!

AirTran merging with Southwest Airlines

If you enjoy traveling like me, you're always on the lookout for the best airfare deals. Consistently, I have found cheap flights and good customer service on AirTran the past two years. The major plus is that they fly out of the airport closest to me, Reagan National. I have also flown on Southwest, but they only fly out of BWI.

Well, it seems I might be able to "move about the country," as Southwest says, more easily because they are buying AirTran. What does this mean? According to this article in the NYT, Southwest will be filling the holes in their service, which AirTran currently flies to - like Atlanta (the nation's largest airport) and the Caribbean. Since both airlines were discount rivals, prices will of course stay low.

My only question... what will happen to my AirTran rewards?!?! I'm halfway to a free one way flight!!!

A Taste of New York in DC

One of the things I miss most about home living in DC now is good italian food. Well, an NYC transplant may have just solved the issue for me!

For my birthday dinner this year I went with a group of friends to Carmines, in Penn Quarter, and finally found some good, homey family style italian food. Dishes are meant to split between 4-6 people and all 8 of us left stuffed after splitting 2 apps 2 entrees and a dessert (and yes, all of the food remained unfinished.)

Highlights of the meal:
The cold antipasto had a lot of variety, from fennel to caprese salad, olives to proscuitto, and and an absolutely delicious white bean dip.
The calamari was crispy and came with a slightly spicy marinara dipping sauce.
The chicken parmesan had a flavorful breading and wasn't smothered in too much cheese.
The gardineira pasta was the perfect mix of pasta and veggies.

For dessert, we had the TITANIC, which, as you can imaginel, is HUGE. There was a whole lotta whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, and i'm sure a whole lot more I couldn't even see!

See the full menu and find out more about Carmines HERE.

I HAD ANOTHER TASTY MEAL! :)

You know how much I LOVE writing all about the tasty food I encounter, so here we go again!

Last night I met a friend for dinner at Cafe St. Ex on 14th St. We were able to grab a table outside, on their super cute outdoor patio. Even better, we were seated at a corner table near a bunch of flowers :) Both of us started out with the arugula salad, which came with pine nuts, peaches, manchego cheese and a cilantro lime dressing. The portion was huge! Throw a protein on top and you could have a very satisfying meal. But that was just the beginning....
For our second course I ordered the Waygu sirloin with grilled romaine and tomatoes. I don't eat tomatoes so I pushed those to the side. The sirloin was cooked to my liking but the romaine was a little salty. I'm not too sure if it's because they oversalted it or because when it cooks more it turns salty; I'll have to do a little research (or if any of you know please tell me.) My friend got the chicken duo and cleaned up her plate.
For desert (yes we still had room) I ordered the melon & marscapone sundae which was light and refreshing - a great way to end the meal and a perfect compliment to the beautiful weather outside. My friend ordered the chocolate cake which came with the tastiest cinnamon ice cream.

For all that food, plus 2 glasses of wine and 2 coffees - the bill was $110... not too shabby I'd say! If you're in that 'hood and looking for something to eat, I'd definitely recommend it.

Lady Gaga's meat dress... Gross or genius?

Everybody's been talking about it the past few days... GROSS in my opinion.

I think we should all get over it and talk about how FAB!!!! Cher looked in her "Turn Back Time" outfit.

FIERCE... and Affordable

I first fell in love with Christian Siriano's designs when he was on Project Runway. Some people found him cocky and annoying, but his talent really put him in a class of his own. And anyone who can make Victoria Beckham smile is doing something very RIGHT when it comes to fashion.

While he may be known for making high concept cutting edge designs, his style is more accessible than one might think. He designs shoes and accessories for Payless! When I first heard about the partnership, I thought it was too good to be true! But now, a year later, I own 2 pairs of shoes and 2 handbags, and Siriano just keeps 'em coming.

His Spring 2011 Fashion Week runway show yesterday showcased his talent for high drama dresses but it also showcased one more thing - HIS SPRING 2011 PAYLESS DESIGNS. He's really tugging at my heart strings with these - I want them all, and retailing for $50 or less, I can afford to buy them all if I chose.

Who says you can't look fierce on a budget ;)

CHICAGO - my other adventures

My trip to Chicago wasn't all about eating! I did do a number of other things.

Navy Pier - the first night we were there was the last Navy Pier fireworks show of the season. I'm usually not too fond of touristy places but didn't mind the nice weather and slow paced stroll down the pier. Theres lots of vendors and things to see all along the Pier - and the ferris wheel looks pretty sweet, but I did not take a ride on it. Onto the fireworks. They were awesome! Although the show was a little short, it was set to music and was pretty awesome.

Wrigley Field - Yup, Wrigley made it onto my food and adventures lists for Chicago. Went there to see the Cubs play the Mets, and although we were rooting for the Cubs, the mets won 18-5. Exciting game. And Wrigleyville is pretty awesome. The bars near the stadium have seats on top so you can see the game -- FROM THE BAR! We only stopped by 1 bar and tried a good local beer - 312.

Millenium Park - Very beautiful green space, interesting water features and fountains, and THE BEAN! Really really nice.

John Hancock Tower - we went up to the observatory first (on the 94th floor) but I'd recommend you save your money and use it on drinks at the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor. Great views of the city, tasty cocktails... and the elevator ride up is only 40 seconds! Worth facing my fear of heights for.

City architecture by night Cruise - Like I said before, I'm not too into touristy things, but I've heard so much about the architecture that I had to get past it and go on a tour cruise. We opted for the nighttime one since the city is so much nicer lit up, and it was really cool to learn all about the history of Chicago. My favorite - the Chicago Tribune building.

Side note: They don't call it the windy city for nothin'... BRING PANTS and wear them if you know it's going to be windy. It's no fun trying to walk around the city while trying to keep your skirt from blowing up.

My next trip to Chicago - I don't know when but hopefully sometime soon. Since a lot of time was spent relaxing, next time I'm definitely taking in the nightlife :)

CHICAGO - the food post...

Hey all!

I'm back from Chicago and it was AMAZING! I can't wait to get back there again. One of the things I was most looking forward to in the Chi was the food and for the most part it did not disappoint! Want the rundown? (You have no choice.) Here it goes:

Chicago Burger Co. - probably the only food misstep in our trip, but granted it was in our hotel and we were quite tired from travelling. A word of advice - if you ever do end up here - take advantage of all the toppings they offer; the plain burger lacks a lot in flavor.

West Egg Cafe - on our search around our hotel for breakfast options we didn't find much, until someone recommended West Egg to us. We were lucky enough to snag a seat outside on a busy Sunday morning and enjoy the food and the weather. I ordered the Carl's Cool Creation which had egg whites, spinach, chicken, cheese and marinara sauce. Very unique and tasty!

Wrigley Field - I'm only including this on the food list because I tried a Chicago hot dog (minus all the fixins) The poppy seed bun is an interesting and welcome addition, and they cooked it right (on a flat top instead of on the warmers.) It might not be a NY dog, but I was definitley satisfied.

Weber Grill - Like the namesake, they really cook everything on Weber grills! I had a french onion soup and steak caesar salad - both of which were good, and the boy had a perfectly cooked melt in your mouth filet mignon. We're both glad we stopped by here.

Argo Tea - I stopped by here Monday morning on the search for a light breakfast. They have a lot of unique tea options, both cold and hot, and some tasty muffins.

Portillos - Mmmmmmmmmmmmm! Street food in a cozy atmosphere is how I'd describe Portillos. The polish sausage was crispy yet juicy and flavorful. The italian beef -- thats a taste experience I'll never forget.

Flatwater - I've read mixed reviews about it but enjoyed it a lot. The river view is absolutely amazing! And we went on a night with perfect weather. Started off with the kobe beef carpaccio, which was tasty but I would have liked a 'lil mo meat. For my entree I had the chilean seabass which had a nice crust to it but was still flavorful and light. The boy had a steak that was also cooked well.

Eleven Diner - the end of our Chicago culinary tour, which we ended up at after a long walk and getting lost. Had a cool atmosphere but was a bit pricey. A fun little place.

Want the full scoop? I'll be updating Yelp with all of my reviews.

i like beer?

At least I did Wednesday night! I had dinner with a few friends at Brasserie Beck and our server brought over beers paired with each of our meals. We even tried a dessert beer (I didn't know they made those.) I really can't tell you anything about the beers we tried, since I'm clueless, but they were pretty damn tasty. It helps that the food is AMAZING (mmm moule frites.) If you're ever in that part of town (11th and K St NW) check it out!

Do you really want to know how many calories are in your double bacon cheeseburger?

Soon you might!

With the national obesity level not getting any better, the FDA wants consumers to be more informed of the calorie content of their choices when dining out. The guidelines, somewhat following the requirements of fast food restaurants in NYC, state that any restaurant with more than 20 locations has to disclose the calorie content of everything on their menu (excluding daily specials and seasonal menu items available for less than 60 days.)

The LA Times did a writeup on it today. I am personally a big supporter of this. Though it may not seem apetizing to see 1,000-something calories next to your burger with fries or chicken alfredo, it helps us to realize how unhealthy our diets really are. And maybe it will give restaurants more of a reason to make their menus more health focused. But that's just wishful thinking ;)

I < 3 Restaurant Week

Last week here in DC was Restaurant Week - where participating restaurants offered a 3-course lunch for 20.10 and dinner for 35.10. For some, that might not seem like the best deal, especially if you don't get an app, entree and desert when you go out; however, if you can snag a reservation at one of the city's best (and more expensive) restaurants this deal is definitely worth it.

Last year my roommates and I had a going away dinner at Rasika. This year, I got together a crew of friends to celebrate being fabulous TLEs (Top Level Executives) at Vidalia. Both restaurants had extensive RW menus. Food and service were both superb and the experiences were both very unique.

Think you missed out? Not completely. There are some restaurants that are extending their RW menu. Find out more HERE.

More reason to dislike American Airlines

It's a long story, but based on a certain travel experience, I have an extreme dislike for American Airlines. Here's another thing to add to the list of things I find wrong with them -- they are now charging more for the seats closest to the front exit of the plane, calling them "Express Seats."

I was stylin' in 1991....

Is it bad I think this looks tasty?

Denny's released their new $2, $4, $6, $8 Value Menu recently and this sandwich has been all over the internet. It's a grilled cheese sandwich with 4 mozz sticks inside. As disgusting as it is, my inner fattie secretly thinks it looks all sorts of delicious. It comes with krinkly fries and marinara... Mmmmm. I've never eaten at a Denny's before, and probably never will, but if I ever find myself at one this is probably what I'll order. Did you know it's only $4! And you thought causing future health problems was going to be expensive... Think again ;)

Current favorite lunch spot :)

Since my job moved from Ballston to Courthouse, my core lunchtime group has been torn apart. Long gone are the days when we'd all just go to the Ballston Common food court and get whatever we want - there's way too much coordinating now. The plus side: I'm not fighting off the urge to eat Chick Fil A every day ;)

I've been at the new office 5 months now and after much culinary exploration I've come across a definite favorite - The Perfect Pita. It's fresh, healthy, affordable and theres so many options it'd take a very long time to try everything on the menu. My currect favorite - the chicken hummus veggie on a whole wheat pita with jalapeno hummus.. (always gotta add in the spice!)

There's a bunch of locations in Northern Virginia and one in DC, so if you're ever near one, I recommend going. I'm still thinking about how tasty my lunch was!

Cute shoes for a good cause

I've long been a fan (about a year) of ShoeDazzle, the members only website that gets you a new pair of shoes for $39.95/month. One of my favorite things about the website is that a few times a year they offer a shoe specially designed to benefit a cause. Last October they offered a hot pink shoe to benefit breast cancer. They've also offered heart health and autism awareness shoes. Their most recent, is a nude shoe designed by Kristen Bell to benefit the Art of Elysium, which offers a variety of artistic workshops to children with serious illnesses. I've already ordered my pair :)

I'm all for indulging in a few spirits before flying

but is this taking it too far?

Gawker's take on this WSJ story is pretty funny, but it's definitely something to think about. Yes, airports need to make more money, but is pushing booze on passengers the way to do it? I usually get to the airport a little early so I can have a drink or two before my flight, and if my layover is a few hours I'll hit up the bar closest to my departing gate, so I know they're making some good money off of me. However, I've never been on a flight that's been delayed because of a drunk unruly passenger, but I can imagine it is quite unpleasant. Do you think 24 hour alcohol sales at airports will increase the number of unruly drunk passengers?

I must admit though, last time I flew, I arrived at DFW at 8am and was quite excited to see all the bars were open ;)

PS - Gawker mentioned the lost wallet while travelling. That's the WORST.

Current Obsession

At the top of my birthday wish list (even though it's a month and a half away)... This Diane von Furstenburg Kindle cover!

Last year for my birthday my mom bought me a Kindle and I've been reading non-stop ever since. Right now I have a red leather case for mine, and yes, its' cute, but ever since seeing this one I've been OBSESSED. DVF is known for classic designs, and I LOVELOVELOVE that the label is embracing modern technology by designing this ebook cover. So many others are very bulky looking but this is super sleek.
And if you know me then you know I can't get enough leopard print. Imagine if blue leopards actually existed ;)

Asthma among most costly diseases in Michigan

The Detroit Free Press published THIS story yesterday about how much the state spends on adult medical costs. Among the most costly diseases - asthma - costing $1797 per year per patient. While the state has cut down on the number of smokers, from 25.1% in 1999 to 20.5% in 2008, the amount they are paying per patient on diseases linked to smoking is much higher than in other states.

Sample Sale Heaven

Anyone who knows me knows that if I could, I'd spend all my money shopping. If I can't spend my money shopping, then I'm looking online at all the things I want to buy. Well, here comes the biggest (and most tempting) mid-day distraction - I'm a part of quite a few online sample sale websites that offer designer clothes for a lot less than department stores. How does it work? First, you have to be invited. Shoot me an email: raqlugo@gmail.com if you're interested. Once you're invited, they send you an email with what that day's sales are. They usually last 24-48 hrs or until everything sells out. Act fast, because they can sell out quickly. Usually it takes about 10 business days to get your purchases, but with these prices, it is well worth it!

Some of the deal's I've taken advantage of: $400 Trina Turk trench coat for $68. $200 T-bags dresses for $60, $180 Voom by Joy Han dress for $30, $100 Kitson jacket for $25.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Gilt Groupe
Hautelook
ideeli
RueLaLa
Swirl by Daily Candy
Billion Dollar Babes
Beyond the Rack

Again, if you want an invite, shoot me an email at raqlugo@gmail.com and I'll send one over to ya. Always glad to share my shopping secrets with others :)

Another good use for salt?

A new (and slightly bizarre if I say so) form of therapy is popping up across the country... Halotherapy. What exactly does it involve?! Sitting in a room caked with salt, while salt from the Dead Sea is pumped into the room. The people who swear by it claim it helps with both respiratory and skin problems, however there is no research to back up these claims. The rooms are modelled after salt caves used in Eastern Europe. The LA Times wrote an interesting piece about it. Read more HERE.

Don't Bring Race into This! (Just Ancestry)

For so long research has relied on factors such as race, gender and age to determine if you are likely to have certain diseases, however, new research on asthma and other lung diseases shows that your ancestry can determine whether you are genetically more likely. Of course, this research comes with a bit of controversy.

Don't Throw Out Inhaler Yet

Children who have both peanut allergies and asthma are more at risk for a life-threatening allergic reaction. Even if asthma symptoms disappear, it can be a life saving decision not to throw out that inhaler. Though some kids may "outgrow" the condition by the time they reach their teens, the effects of an allergic reaction to food could be much worse without an inhaler.

C-Section Babies More Likely to be Asthmatic

This research out of the UK says that babies born via c-section are more likely to develop asthma, as well as other illnesses, later in life. Children born naturally are exposed to certain germs that help boost their immune system early in life, and due to the sterility of operating rooms, c-section babies lack expose. While C-sections are performed mostly for medical reasons, there are some mothers who elect to have the procedure as opposed to natural childbirth. Based on this research, it's something they may want to re-consider.

Acetaminophen and Increase in Asthma

According to THIS article, it appears that women who take acetaminophen while pregnant have an increased chance of having a child with asthma. While the belief is still wildly held that asthma is hereditary, the researchers think that acetaminophen increases the likelihood of the disease being transferred over.

Another interesting point made by the article - high fat meals decrease reaction to abuterol. Adding to the reasons why I should stay away from that burger and french fries!

Take your Meds!

60% of asthma hospitalizations occur when patients are not taking their medications properly.

I can speak for the truth to this, as I've experienced it... multiple times =\

There's an App for that!

Has your cough been getting gradually worse over the past few days? Has wheezing increased as well? You might want to enter all of that into THIS app, which uses Google Health and helps asthma sufferers monitor the severity of their symptoms. If your doctor ever wants you to track your symptoms, this is so much easier than keeping a pen and paper around (I know I'd lose it after a day or two.)

PS - Run, Raquel! Run! (Triple R maybe?!) has a sleek chic new look. Hope you all like it

More cool food research!

They're trying to develop an peanut that many people with peanut allergies could be able to eat!

PS - kids getting bullied on playgrounds by being chase around with peanut butter sandwiches... that's so mean

You are what you eat

Fast food restaurants and grill enthusiasts watch out - THIS study says that children who eat 3 or more burgers a week are more likely to develop asthma.

Now that's something to chew on!

Cleaning products linked to asthma

I've always noticed that while cleaning I've been more prone to asthma attacks - the combination of both the products and the dust being brought up is a lot for my poor little lungs to handle. Well - turns out exposure to cleaning products can also induce asthma in people who don't already have it. Check THIS out.

Doctor's Orders!

Yesterday was my check-up since starting back on Singulair two months ago. Usually allergy season is struggle city for me - however this time it was different. Even when my allergies were bothering me, I did not have as many breathing problems, and if I did need my inhaler, it was never more than once per day.

So it seems the Singulair is working just fine for me; however, if I do start needing my inhaler more often, then more medication would be needed. This could also be a seasonal solution, and something to consider since winters are usually the worst for me.

I'm glad to say I've been feeling more in control of my health and asthma than I ever have and am happy that I've finally taken the steps to improve my quality of life.

As always, I'll keep y'all updated.

Keep Calm

My Google Alerts the past few days have been all over THIS study stating that stress at work increases the likelihood of developing asthma. Stay calm everyone!

Also, I'm so behind on things I just realized May is Asthma Awareness Month! So everyone, spend the last few days of May educating yourself on all things asthma. I will be!

Also - have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Becoming more common for children - Excersize indused asthma

I've always had trouble in gym class due to my asthma, but never knew until now that asthma can be excersize induced. In the past, many of the signs of excersize induced ashtma have been seen as people just being out of shape, but they are something serious to look after. According to THIS story from US News and World Report (where I once interned!) the 7 signs to look out for are:

"Shortness of breath... cough... chest tightness... reduced athletic performance... excessive fatigue... wheezing... prolonged recovering time following excersize..."

These symptoms can also be made worse by bad air conditions such as high pollen count. Always be sure to keep a lookout!

I am the worst...

at updating this blog lately! I just noticed my last post was 2 weeks ago.

Work has been crazy busy lately -- busier than it's ever been. So busy I had to postpone my follow-up with the pulmonologist for a month, so I'll have to wait a little longer to see what improvements I've made. I could not be happier with how much better I've felt since starting on Singulair. I know it takes a few months to see the true difference, but I have noticed such a difference already (take that allergie season!) Since my asthma is also allergy induced, I usually struggle a lot during allergy season, but this time around it hasn't been nearly as bad. I still get the watery eyes/runny nose/sore throat deal but I haven't had much trouble breathing.

I'm hoping this is the last week I'll be this busy. I also said that to myself last week. I PROMISE PROMISE PROMISE I'll have something of substance to say soon.

Stay tuned in ;)

Quick Update!

Hey all!

I've been super busy lately so I just wanted to check in real quickly. It's been about a month since I started taking Singular, and although the medication has to be taken for a few months before you see the real effects, my asthma has been much better this allergy season than in recent years. Also, in the free time that I have had, I've been running on the treadmill and outside (no more of that walking I used to do!)

PS - I don't know if I ever properly explained what asthma is, and THIS is a great resource for an easy to understand description.

Do you know what May is?...

...It's Asthma Awareness Month! In all my years I had no idea.

That little tidbit is just one of the important pieces of information I found out from http://www.epa.gov/asthma. Once again Google Alerts is steering me in the right direction.

Y'all should check it out - there's a lot of interesting information on there. I'd write more, but I gotta get back to work. I promise to post more about my findings in the coming days.

One of my favorite places

Last weekend I visited my family and friends back on Long Island. I don't make it home too often so whenever I do I am always really excited for it. The past few times I've been home the weather has been cold so I haven't been able to do one of my favorite things - walk in Hendrickson Park.

The park is only a block and a half from where my family lives and as far back as elementary school I can remember always having a good time at the park: field trips to the park to ride our bikes, the Valley Stream Pool, playing basketball (my team was 1st place in 1995), playing mini golf.

Being the park reminded me of one reason why I love where I'm from so much, and it also made me want to work out. The park has always been a great place to excersize. There is a 1.5 mile trail surrounding the park with running and bike lanes, and along the way plenty of spots to stretch and do different excercizes. Coming off from my 5K experience, I am looking forward to running the whole course in the park next time I come home.

Taste of the Nation

Monday was Taste of the Nation, the event I've been helping to plan since last October. OMG it was awesome! The food was amazing - I tried some things I've never tried before, like lambs neck - the drinks were too good and the crowd who came out was great. Patrick and I bid on a basket of champagne and private vineyard tour in the silent auction.. and WON! Hopefully soon we'll know how much money was raised for Share Our Strength. I'll update again when I get that.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5K

At the race with David and Patrick
Yesterday was the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5K Run/Walk. Despite my lack of sleep, I found the energy to make it all the way through and also hit a milestone! I've never been able to run a mile without stopping - and not only did I make it past the first mile mark without stopping, I kept running for another half a mile, walked half a mile and ran the rest! I didn't even think I could do it, so I'm quite impressed with myself.

Overall results: I finished 848 out of 1246 women with an average of 12:57 per mile.

Why I love Google Alerts

Everyday I get an alert for articles/studies/etc Google finds online on asthma research. I've been checking for organizations that specifically do research and spread information on just asthma - and this feature has been a big help. Today it provided me a link to The Asthma Center, which looks like it'll be a big help. Look out for more information soon!

Could vitamin D be the missing link?

THIS study seems to think so.

Many asthmatic children have a vitamin D deficiency, which has researchers saying that even infants should be getting vitamin D supplements, in hopes that it will reduce the likelihood of a number of diseases, including asthma. The study also notes that many mothers are deficient in vitamin D, and it is one of the only vitamins lacking in breast milk.

My Trip to Puerto Rico!..

I've been meaning to write about my trip for a while but things have been pretty hectic at work since I've been back. I'm just finally getting a few moments to breathe and get to all the things I've been meaning to do for a week.

I'll stop complaining - I just had the most relaxing vacation. After feeling overworked for quite some time I called my mom saying I've had enough - and that's where the idea for my trip came from. I took 3 days to get away from everything, FAR FAR AWAY, and it was so amazing I don't think I could have been stressed out even if I tried.

I had my first ever massage and facial, which were amazing. I spent as much time as possible by the pool and came back a little red :) My resort was right on the ocean so it was nice to be on the beach as well. Had myself quite a few pina coladas and some tasty Puerto Rican food. And not to sound cheesy - I felt such a sense of pride being there since I am half Puerto Rican. I feel a desire to go back and learn more about the culture. All in all a great trip.

I think it's important for everyone to take some time to themselves, whether it be going on a trip to somewhere beautiful like I did, or just a few days off of work. Though, I do recommend getting as far away from everything as possible. Just think about it, you could be here:

ONLY SIX DAYS AWAY

I'm actually doing the 5K run/walk, but they don't have a logo for that.
ALSO!!!! - Taste of the Nation is ONE WEEK AWAY! Next week is going to be a really exciting one for me!

RPI Course focues on Asthma

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is currently offering a course studying asthma called Asthmatic Spaces - New York. The course studies and publishes real time research findings about asthma and its affect on public health throughout the state. Kim Fortun, the professor who created the class, chose asthma as the subject because:
...of its impact on public health, because of its scientific complexity, and
because of the way it draws together people with many different kinds of
expertise — in health care, basic science, air quality assessment, building
design, genetics, and many other areas

Students will also contribute to The Asthma Files, a public site for all research asthma related which is updated by professors, researchers, doctors, activists, etc.

A Step (walking -- not running) in the Right Direction

I kept good with my new years promise to myself to get my asthma under control by visiting a pulmonologist today. After ending up in the ER on Christmas Eve I realized that taking a resue inhaler alone was not going to cut it anymore -- I needed to be placed on some maintenance medication.

I'm back on Singulair -- an asthma medication I've taken on and off for years in the past, and in general has worked well for me. Unlike the past times I've taken it, I plan on sticking to it this time. I'm determined to let my asthma affect me as little as possible. I even have a follow-up in six weeks. Lets hope there's some progress!

New research being done by FDA & AstraZeneca

A common ingredient in some asthma medications is undergoing safety research. One of the medications affected -- Symbicort.

Check out the press release HERE.

I haven't read too much about Symbicort before this. Interesting all the research that goes into medications.

The Growth of Singulair

When I was 14 I was prescribed singular to help me get my asthma under control and ever since then I've been on and off the medication. I just read in THIS article that it is one of the most prescribed asthma medications in the world. It says:

Strong Singulair growth driven by allergic rhinitis indication Singulair sales grew by 57% in the fourth quarter of 2002 and grew 35% in 2003 to reach sales of $2 billion for the year. At present it is the most prescribed asthma controller in the US and the second leading product in global total prescription. Merck received FDA approval for Singulair for the relief of symptoms caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis. It is the only brand targeted at both asthma and allergic rhinitis. The company is expected to benefit from patient dissatisfaction with other brands, brand switching and physician familiarity with Singulair as an asthma treatment.

In the coming weeks I'm looking on going back on maintenance medications for my asthma. Singulair will definitely be something I'll be talking to my doctor about.

Childhood onset asthma... Genetic?

THIS is interesting.

The above article suggests that researchers have found a genetic mutation that causes childhood onset asthma. If true and they can figure out which gene it is, better treatments will be able to be developed. This could make a world of difference to the 9 million children in the US with asthma.

(And if they develop something for adults, you bet I'll be the first to go to my doctor to learn more about it!)

I've been sneezing all winter

... and THIS might have something to do with it!

According to the article from BusinessWeek, climate change has caused pollen season to last even longer. For those people with mild allergies, in some cases it has made them worse. For those of us with severe allergies, the thought of springtime and warm weather has become not as pleasant.

If you start to feel like your allergies are acting up, don't hesitate to go to your doctor - we have a long pollen season ahead of us

Just a thought

A few weeks ago I signed up to get Google Alerts about research being done on asthma. I've noticed that most of the links go to newspapers and journals from other countries. Do other countries put more of an emphasis on researching asthma than we do -- and why might that be?

MLK Service Day

This week has been non-stop for me so I haven't gotten a chance to write about my MLK Service Day experience until now.

I volunteered through Greater DC Cares, and this event was my 3rd experience volunteering with them (The other 2 being Servathon last May and 9/11 Day of Service.) This project sent me to Springhill Lake Elementary School in Greenbelt, MD. They invited the community to volunteer, so in total there would be between 75-100 people at the project. The school needed some sprucing up, and projects included painting stripes around the cafeteria as well as a mural, painting hallways and doorways, painting bathrooms as well as yardwork on campus grounds. I headed up a group of 30 or so people in decorating the cafeteria. We also painted a mural on one of the walls of fruits and vegetables.

I lived 5 minutes from Greenbelt during my years at Maryland, so I enjoyed getting out of DC for the morning and helping out another place I identify with. The City Councilman from Greenbelt also came out, which created a real sense of community at the event.

I didn't get to see how the rest of the projects turned out but I was very satisfied with how the cafeteria looked when my group was done with it.. There were even a few students walking around the school, and I could tell they liked what they saw as well.

This was the first time I've participated in a project of this size. In my other 2 experiences, I was a project manager in charge of a group of 25 people working on 1 or 2 things. It was awesome to see such a large group of people get together and work with other Project Managers and Leaders towards the same goal.

I wish I had photos but I forgot to bring my camera :( If I get a hold of some I'll be sure to post them.

Get involved!: http://www.dc-cares.org/

Style to benefit others

Shoedazzle has been one of my favorite websites for a while. For only $39.95 a month, you get to pick a pair of shoes from 5 choices picked out for you by the site's stylists. When I first joined in October, they gave every member an extra selection - a beautiful pink pump - and a portion of the sales of that shoe would go towards breast cancer research.
For American Heart Month in Feburary, they are doing something similar. They will be offering a SUPER HOT red shoe, and for each one purchased, 10% goes to WomenHeart.

Check out the shoe and learn more HERE

A quick fix is not always best

Not too long ago I learned the importance of taking preventative asthma medications when I ended up in the ER on Christmas Eve as the result of an asthma attack. THIS release based on a UK study helps to further that point. Using preventative medications, while they may take longer to show the desired effects, are the best way to combat asthma. Relief inhalers, which offer almost immediate relief, can actually make asthma worse since with frequent use they can become less effective.

While living at home back in high school, I tried out a few preventative medications and had very positive results. Once I moved away for college, I ended up stopping these medications because I thought my asthma was under control. As I am now learning, it is becoming increasingly more important for me to get back and stay on these medications if I want to live a life less effected by asthma.

In the coming weeks I plan on FINALLY doing the research I should have done a while ago on the different types of medications out there and figure out which one or ones will work best for me. I'll keep y'all updated

Because I need more text message reminders..

I came across this article from a newspaper in Oklahoma today (must be a slow news day for them) which talks about the benefits of using text messages to remind patients of appointments and to take their medications. The idea was put in place by the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, but I think a service like this would be helpful to a lot of adults. I know that I personally can be very irresponsible and forget to take my medication everyday if I have to, so this would be beneficial to me. With my Blackberry attached to me almost 24/7, I am never one to miss or not respond to a text. While this is a program that could get very expensive for some people, I do think that if it could work out somehow, it would have it's merrits.

Check out the article HERE.
